Trail Maintenance Days Are Coming

I know it seems a bit far off, but before you know it, spring will be here.  At least, that's what I'm telling myself.  I personally have already been tracking the sun from my window perch as it rises and sets across the sky here in the New River Gorge of West Virginia

Yes, the days are getting longer despite what the temperature, gusting winds and drifting snow are telling us.

So, as I look forward to spring, one of the first events of the season for ACE is Trail Maintenance Weekends.  This year, we have them scheduled for April 10-11 and April 17-18.

If you are a hiker or biker, you already know that winter takes its toll on delicate trails — fallen trees, water damage and lots of leaves.  And since ACE has miles of trails, it takes a lot of hands to get them back in working order for all to enjoy.  Yes, ACE trails are free to all who want to use them, hiking or biking, that is.

You know when something seems to good to be true, and you think to yourself, I'm not even going to bother to investigate this deal — there has to be a catch.  Well, I have good news, this is a win-win proposition.

Here's the deal: from 9 a.m. - 4 p.m. on Saturday and from 9 a.m. - 12 p.m. on Sunday, you will help us clean up trails and build new ones, if the opportunity presents itself.  In trade, you get a free 2-night stay in a Cozy Cabin complete with outdoor hot tub.  We also enjoy a little play-time at the end of each day to reap the benefits of our hard work with a group bike ride.

It's a great deal for all because we get a little free labor, while you get a few days away from the usual grind.  It really is a win-win.

As we get closer, I'll have more details, but in the meantime, if this is something that may interest you, let us know.

Last year was a blast - perfect weather and good people. It's not back breaking work and it is a good way to make new friends. We had well over 20 people and we reworked the Thurmond Loop entrance, removed a few trees and 2 of workers got to be on the Travel Channel riding ATV's! It's a great way to learn about trail building.

I am very interested in helping out one of the trail maintenance weekends. I worked at ACE last year but will be unable to come back this summer. A weekend working on the trails sounds like a great way to be outdoors this spring. Please keep me updated! Thanks!

Glad to read you going to join us. I'm looking forward getting out this spring myself and digging in the dirt.
