I was inspired this spring by Shelby Dietz. Shelby was a guest here at ACE who had done a lot to get involved in raising money for Cancer Research. I did a blog about her fundraising efforts at ACE. She also wrote one to update us on the fundraiser she participated in.

I decided to follow her lead and get involved myself. And I decided to take my ACE family with me.

Mark your calendars: June 18, 2010 is the Fayette County Relay for Life and you should all be there. This event takes place all over the world as a tribute to those who have battled cancer, remember loved ones lost and fight back against the disease.

Our local event takes place at Oak Hill High School Stadium. It begins with a Survivor’s Lap as a symbol of the victories achieved over cancer. The most moving part of the evening starts after dark with the Luminaria Ceremony.

Candles are lit inside bags with the names of a person touched by cancer. A lap is often walked in silence during this part of the evening.

I know this is a commitment and I appreciate everyone who has gotten involved. Fundraising can be challenging and frustrating but I have a secret. The feeling that you get from giving back is priceless. The other night, I was trying to get organized. What should the booth look like? Who will join the team? Will I meet my goal?

Suddenly, I had the moment. I am so concerned about meaningless details while people are in the midst of chemo and radiation. I had some real perspective. Now I plan to enjoy every minute of this planning.

Let's make it a date. Meet me there at 6:30 p.m. The theme this year is “Birthday Party” and ACE’s tent will be like no other. I’ll be expecting you.

If you are interested, join our team or donate to the team.

The more the merrier. I am going to give Shelby a call to see if she wants to join us.
