ACE Adventure Blog

A short description about your blog

If you've been keeping up with our blog posts, then you are aware that ACE is building a new Welcome Center this year. If you haven't been keeping up, shame on you!

With this building comes a new opportunity for ACE to blaze the trail for geothermal heating and cooling. What is geothermal heating and cooling, you ask? Well, I'll do my best not to make this sound like a science project - it really is pretty cool. Basically, this system uses the Earth's relatively constant temperature to provide heating, cooling, and hot water for homes and commercial buildings.

What could be better than a day of rafting on the Gauley River followed by a frosty beverage and watching the big game on the big screen?  Nothing!

I have been waiting-not-very-patiently since January for college football to start.  Imagine my excitement when I found out we would be showing the big game on our big screen on Saturday nights during Gauley Season.

I was given the task, as I'm a huge fan of college ball, to find the Saturday night schedule for our big screen showings.

Here's the schedule as it stands today:

As a reservationist, one of our responsibilities is to answer any questions guests have concerning their vacation.  This is also where many guests unknowingly provide us with much needed comic relief.

I understand that you probably have never done anything like we provide, so really I am not poking fun.  I can promise you that if I go to the Grand Canyon, the first thing I’m going to ask before I get on my donkey is how often do they fall off the cliff?  Those folks have probably heard that question thousands of times and probably think it’s absurd, but for me, it’s a legitimate concern — so trust me, I get it.

I’d like to share with you some of our more unique questions that we’ve received, along with the answers:

  • Do you get wet while rafting?  As it is an activity that takes place in the water, let’s assume you’ll get wet, so wear your swimsuit.

Working in the whitewater industry we get a few perks, such as being able to offer our families the opportunities to raft with us when they come to visit their kids who have defected from the North.

I’m one of those kids, and my mom comes at least once a year to raft with us.

My mom is fit, attractive, has a killer wardrobe, and swears that broccoli can cure any and all ailments.  She’s also always up for trying new things, even if it does make her a little nervous.

My mom’s first rafting trip was on the Lower New River. She was all for it, and very excited.  I would never use the word clumsy if I were to describe my mom, but that is exactly what I will use when describing my mother while whitewater rafting.

Gauley Mountain Geocaching

geocaching on Gauley Mountain, near ace adventure resortOne particular winter day with the snow flying and temps around 20 degrees, my husband and I decided that we we're going to try geocaching for the first time.

We found www.geocaching.com and became registered members in order to find out where we could find caches here at ACE  and around the New River Gorge area. After researching about a dozen caches, we threw on more layers, grabbed our Garmin GPS unit, our 3 dogs and we were off. We found our first one quite quickly, the others were found just as quickly.

As the day pressed on, so did the snow - and a lot of it. But by this time we didn't care. We were so completely addicted, we HAD to find just one more. So, despite the almost blizzard like conditions and our complete lack of common sense, we decided to forge ahead. "It" just happened to be located on Gauley Mountain, one of the highest peaks in the area. We were half up the mountain, a blizzard swirling around us - I started to question my sanity, but there was no turning back - literally. By the time we reached the top of the mountain, it was a complete whiteout, and the drive up had grated our nerves to the breaking-point.

My husband, who had the GPS unit but wasn't looking at it or the coordinates, proceeds to walk up the mountain. "There's no way someone would put a cache at the parking lot, it has to be at the very top", he stated. Of course, I argued, but it was futile. I fell in line behind him and followed him to the top, trudging through two-plus feet, cursing him and this new hobby under my breath.

We FINALLY reached the top, and wouldn't you know it, the coordinates weren't even close! We spent an hour and a half on top of that stupid mountain looking for a cache that wasn't there! Thoughts of murder flashed through my mind, but instead, I grabbed the GPS unit and headed back down the mountain not caring if he was following or not.

Why They Call It A Guide Stick

horseback riding with ace adventure resortWhere do I begin? Well, I even had psychotic turkeys and they would always chase me.

OK, maybe I should begin earlier. I was born in Youngstown, Ohio, and grew up in a little town called Salem. I got that little-girl dream of having a pony. Several, actually. I grew up raising horses, goats, rabbits, ducks, geese, turkey and chickens. I even showed my horse in the local 4-H club, and some American Quarter Horse Association shows www.aqua.com.

During my senior year in high school, working part-time at a hardware store, I met a guy who also worked as a raft guide on the New River in West Virginia. One thing led to another, and I was taking my first road trip after graduation to visit him in good ol' West Virginia.
