River Trips

ACE Adventure Blog

A short description about your blog

Ever wonder how those delicious ACE lunches at Sweets’ Falls, culinary treats on a Gauley River overnight or sizzling mid-day meal on the Lower Gauley happen?

It all begins VERY early at the ACE lunch kitchen.

Until 2010, I’ve only missed the grand opening of the Gauley River for the fall whitewater rafting season once in the last 22 years.  Once.

Ah, that first Gauley River trip …

It’s that time of year, comes around once, can’t miss it if you are in southern West Virginia. A rafting trip on the New or Gauley River? You bet. If you are lucky enough to be in town through August 21, though, there is another “don’t miss,” so plan on spending an extra day at the Resort. It’s time for the 2010 State Fair of West Virginia.

For most folks that means a trek to Fairlea (about an hour from ACE) to frolic on the midway, eat all of those things your doctor would scold you for and enjoy top-notch entertainment. For me, I move in on Aug. 10 and stay the duration, assisting my fellow Department of Agriculture co-workers with the Annex Building and our all-West Virginia products Country Store.

Hey there, Waldo again. Nope, hippopotamus are certainly not a creature that can be found at the stables. However, we are great fans of the concept of hippotherapy at the stables.

See, we mules and horses aren’t able to explain exactly why but we know that riding is therapeutic. Perhaps it’s the findings on companion animals. The geriatric crowd uses all sorts of critters (dogs, cats, etc.) for companionship.

China_ACE_Alumni

I just returned from a business trip in Shanghai, China. Short (duration), long (19-plus hour flight each way) trip but I got the opportunity to meet up with an ACE alumni.

Robin Wong is a consultant for many U.S. trade groups including the Southern United States Trade Association (SUSTA) and the Alaska Seafood Council. He works with these groups to identify potential export markets for U.S. products in his country of more than 1.3 billion people.

I’d love to think that I’m a worldly traveler. I know, embrace the culture, celebrate the diversity, see the sights. I can’t help but know that my fellow blogger, Scott, would have a whole different perspective on my trip, but hey, he thinks an overnight camping trip pegs his adventure meter. So maybe I’m not doing so bad. I am a small town girl at heart.

Recently, I left the comfort of the New River Gorge for a journey to China, the largest U.S. trading partner, a net importer of food, a country of interest for all.

Here’s my list and I’m checking it twice:

  • 148 shoes (74 pair)
  • 1,184 spikes
  • Rounded rather than pointy tips
  • 2,960 minutes (49 hours) for manicures
  • Sizes: 00 to 10 ½

Yes, it’s Waldo, confessing to my shoe fetish. May is coming and everyone needs new shoes, don’t they?
