ACE Adventure Blog

Great people having a great time
in the GREAT outdoors!

I've been reading the ACE blog all summer, and I'm finally making my dive into the world of blogging. I'm Brianna Jackson, Adventure Consultant extraordinaire and outdoor junkie.

I would say it's in my blood, but my mom didn't become a raft guide until I was older. If it is in our blood, it's a recessed gene that must be discovered.

My mother, Tracy Jackson, found her niche here at ACE as a river guide. In contrast, I am a sampler of everything, master of nothing. I love rafting, hiking, mountain biking, the zip lines, swimming, caving — the list never ends.

I have spent several summers employed as an Adventure Consultant. If guests ask if I am from the area, I emphatically reply that, yes, I am local. This is my home; I love West Virginia.

Being a raft guide sure has its perks. While many people may have a picture of the New River Gorge in their cubicle or office, I’m blessed to be able to play in it everyday — and share it with great people like yourselves.

My name is Matt, and I am a second year guide with ACE.

Before coming to ACE and West Virginia in 2008, I was determined to work in the sports industry for my hometown team the Portland Trailblazers.

I have a degree from the University of Oregon in Sports Business, and have worked for multiple professional sports teams. While they were all great experiences, something was missing — and it was the river.

Have you ever been on a rafting trip, looked at the raft guides and thought, "Wow, this would be an awesome job"?

Well, not only did that happen to me, my wife got hooked, too!

Hi everyone, my name is David Barkley and my wife, Cheri, and I are among the newest members to the ACE blogging team.  We discovered ACE and whitewater rafting via the ACE website.

Here's a brief synopsis:

Let me start by telling you a little about myself and how it all began.

Originally from Florida, transplanted to coastal North Carolina, I'm a 24-year veteran educator, who finds herself always learning something new. This time however, it wasn't in a traditional classroom, but through experiencing some of the best whitewater in the world!

In mid-July, a few years ago, my husband and I decided to take our first whitewater rafting trip with ACE.  We were hooked!

Hello fellow bloggers and visiting guests! This is a little introduction of me and how I ended up at a dream job at ACE Adventure Resort.

I graduated from WVU with a marketing degree in May 2008.

I sold cars, insurance, and memberships for various companies through April 2009.  I must say that at this point in my life I was feeling a bit battle-torn by the job market as a college graduate.

But to my great surprise, I received a call from Jack Lund at ACE in early May 2009, and my dreams came true — and beyond!

Greetings from the river’s edge!  I’m Alyson, and I’m one of those lucky people who works her “dream job.”  I don’t have a cubicle or desk.  My uniform requires sandals and sunscreen.  And my commute involves wild bus rides and rubber boats.

If you haven’t guessed yet, I’m a whitewater guide here at ACE in wild and wonderful West Virginia.  I spend most days out on the river, but from time to time, I dry off and write down some of my favorite memorable experiences.  I’d like to share some of those stories in this here fancy ACE blog so you readers can get informed, inspired, and hopefully entertained.

raft with TUG - the Tall Ugly Guy!
Howboutchee! My name is Tug. Many of ya'll know me as the Tall Ugly Guy sitting in the back of your raft yelling commands at you. Well that is true, it is my true passion and what brought me to this Shangri-la of outdoor living known as Fayetteville, WV.

I was in college at Liberty in Virginia, and I walked past the summer job bulletin board and saw the ad for a whitewater raft guide. I thought, "what a cool way to spend the summer". I had never rafted before, so my first trip was a training run and, well, I fell in love with this place and have never really looked back.

That was in 1990. Since then I have done thousands of river trips. My favorite, of course, is the Upper Gauley. I've met hundreds of great people, many of whom I keep in touch with throughout the year, and at the top of the list is meeting my wife Cindy. She was a guest on a trip; but that's a story for another day! Digressing, I did complete a BA degree at Davis & Elkins College and a Masters program at the University of Utah.

Next month, I begin my 20th year of working for ACE Adventure Resort. And, as the good ol' Grateful Dead once sang, "What a long strange trip it has been!" In my years here I have done many things and held many positions. I have been in charge of training raft guides, program director, grass-cutter, among others, and now I am currently managing ACE Adventure Gear Shoppe (AAG).
