I just returned from a business trip in Shanghai, China. Short (duration), long (19-plus hour flight each way) trip but I got the opportunity to meet up with an ACE alumni.

Robin Wong is a consultant for many U.S. trade groups including the Southern United States Trade Association (SUSTA) and the Alaska Seafood Council. He works with these groups to identify potential export markets for U.S. products in his country of more than 1.3 billion people.

So this year, I have made a list of ACE-related New Year's Resolutions. I readily admit that I have not taken advantage of all that we offer here, but this is my year: Scott's top 10 for 2010.

Now, what you have to understand - and I have referred to it in many blogs - is that I am moderately to severely athletically challenged. More aptly put, I am a clutz. Sometimes, situations like that make me very nervous. And those nerves can breed what I call "the donkey laugh." A loud, honking hee haw of a laugh.

It surfaced once at a Moroccan restaurant that had a belly dancer. And she was very buxom. Well, she took a shine to me and gyrated and thrusted to the point that it was full tilt donkey city. I still can't eat couscous.

I have been guiding now for 10 years and have had many memorable guests in my boat. However, one particular crew wandered into my boat and my life. You may have noted their names on the ACE blog before (New Jersey Likes Rafting?). We affectionately refer to them as the "Russian Girls" (they are actually from Kazakhstan). In no particular order, Naira, Alla and Yuliya (Julia) first came to ACE with a bunch of friends to do the New River, got addicted as people do and came back to do a whole weekend during Gauley Season.

They ended up staying four days, doing an Overnight, a Double Upper and a Marathon. I just happened to be river boarding on their third day on the river and they stopped and talked to me that day. Not thinking much of it, I got a good night's rest before the Marathon the next day.

I was trip leading that day and what appears before my eyes at 6 a.m. at check-in but the Russians. They wanted to be in my boat. Thinking to myself, three small women, oh yeah, and they can't swim very well, on a Marathon - this should be interesting.

Here's a guest blog post from our friend Ben, one of the many good people who bring you Bridge Day:

If you keep up with what's going on over at ACE, it's nearing the end of Gauley Season and they're paddling straight for Bridge Day.  You know Bridge Day, right?  It's the West Virginia rafting season end of the year party, and the biggest festival in the state.  And, yup, you're invited.

Here's Bridge Day in a nutshell:  People go parachuting off the New River Gorge Bridge while you raft the river below.  About 100,000 other people stand on the bridge and eat funnel cake.  There are also festivals in town, live music and lots of opportunity to eat yourself silly.  Basically, it's a chance to throw down at one of the biggest and best parties anywhere.

Let me give you a little weekend run-down.

I was a child of the 1980s and loved every minute of it.  I loved the paisley, the neon, my worn copy of The Official Preppy Handbook, and my Swatch watch. I was glued to MTV for all of Madonna’s new videos.  Was Boy George really a boy?

So growing up here, I can remember a time before the New River Gorge Bridge.  What is now a 60-second drive across the bridge used to take an eternity.  And as a kid with car sickness, it was an exercise in torture.   I made that journey many a time with my head hanging out of the window.

The development and building of the bridge was big news, so the opening of the bridge and Bridge Day was an occasion.
