Hey there, Waldo again. Nope, hippopotamus are certainly not a creature that can be found at the stables. However, we are great fans of the concept of hippotherapy at the stables.

See, we mules and horses aren’t able to explain exactly why but we know that riding is therapeutic. Perhaps it’s the findings on companion animals. The geriatric crowd uses all sorts of critters (dogs, cats, etc.) for companionship.

During the summer, days off come around as often as a blue moon. A guide who isn't scheduled on the river that day will talk to a manager and try to pick up an extra trip, a canopy tour or some hours helping repair rafts in the boat building. There's always something to keep you busy at ACE.

Normally, I sleep later than the ACE breakfast buffet's open hours, so I head into downtown Fayetteville to grab some brunch at Cathedral Café. Built in an old church, it still retains its stained glass windows and ambiance. Cathedral makes an amazing cup of coffee, served perfectly with Sweet Potato Pancakes. Mmmm, pancakes. Anyway, a good day starts with a great breakfast, right?

Lately, I have been overcome with the news.  This all began in December with the endless snow. I felt like Jack Nicholson in The Shining; all of the snow was driving me over the edge.  And that was topic one on everyone's mind.  Have you checked the weather?  When was the last time you checked the weather?

First of all, I am not Willard Scott.  Secondly, the only 100th birthday I celebrate will be my own.  Smuckers or not.  Why is everyone obsessed with milk and bread when it snows? I am concerned with Little Debbie cakes and Coronas.  Obviously, my priorities took a U-turn.

My Google Calendar is overloaded with things. Deadlines. Appointments.  The last thing I want to worry about is a made-up, fake holiday like Valentine's Day.

You will not see me going out and buying a Ground Hog's Day card.  To me, Ground Hog's Day is a movie, not an occasion. And Arbor Day.  Is it ironic to buy an Arbor Day card made of paper from a tree?  It totally challenges my newly discovered green attitude. We are killing trees to make cards made of trees for a fake holiday about trees. Confusing.

But I digress.  This is about February 14th, and how ACE has just what you need for this so-called holiday.

Editor's Note: Meet Shallon.  She visited ACE Adventure Resort last summer with her Girl Scout troop. Her mother wrote us a letter about their trip. We hope you enjoy it.  Do you have a great vacation story?  We'd love for you to share it with us.

ACE Adventure Resort,

This letter is long overdue but I'm just getting around to writing it.  I wanted to express my appreciation for the programs and staff at ACE Adventure Resort.  I visited with my daughter's Girl Scout troop back in June.  We had a group of about 22 from Michigan on our annual trip down to ACE.

For my daughter and I, this is our second year.  We once again thoroughly enjoyed our rafting trip (this year with Puppy), zip-lining and my daughter also loved the horseback riding again.

There's something to be said for this high-adventure activity, but mostly for the wonderful staff that make this so fun, challenging and purely enjoyable.  ACE has such a special place in our hearts for what they have to offer.  You see, my daughter, Shallon, who turned 19, has Down Syndrome.

If you’ve never experienced our Zip-Line Canopy Tour before, you really should.  It is one of our most popular and thrilling adventures that the whole family can enjoy.

You won't find another quite like it: Built along the cliff-lines of the New River Gorge National River, this bird's-eye view of one of our nation’s natural treasures is so unique, it was featured on the Travel Channel this past year.

So how do you go about creating a canopy tour map in this kind of terrain?  It’s not easy.  I’ve been creating maps for more than two decades, and this was one of the most physically demanding maps I have ever done.  I already had the basic topography, roads and trails mapped out, but I needed to map the cliff lines, climbing routes and thin wires in the air!

Be sure to tune in to the Travel Channel this Wednesday night at 8 p.m. EST — ACE is going to get a bit more than 15 seconds of fame!

In the spring, the Travel Channel sent down a crew to film ACE for their “Extreme” series.

This series features just about anything unique from extreme towns and roadside adventures to truck stops and super stores.  ACE was filmed for the “Extreme Resorts” show because of all the extreme adventures here on property.
