This is a hot topic on my mind this month. I'm planning our first family vacation and I find myself running into a brick wall: What can we do with our 18-month-old toddler that involves minimum tantrums? It's made me think about what I do with my toddler here at home, and I thought I would share some of our favorite things to do in the spring and summer:

1. Nature walks. By far this is one of my favorite summer activities. I go for mild hiking trails or we simply explore around a few trees. My daughter loves stepping on leaves and pointing out birds! Sometimes we bring the stroller, but if it's a safe area we hold hands.

2. The Mystery Hole (http://www.mysteryhole.com/). This is geared more toward young children than toddlers, and I enjoyed taking my cousins to visit. The name says it all!

This guest post is by Dave Pollard from the New River Birding and Nature Festival, held annually here in the New River Gorge.

Bird Nerds, Botanists, Nature Lovers, and those just seeking serenity will be pleased to hear the New River Birding and Nature Festival will return April 26 — May 1 this year.

Located at the main intersection in Whipple, WV, stands the only remaining coal mine company store of its kind, The Whipple Company Store.  This building was the center of life for the coal miners it served in the late 19th and early 20th centuries.

This store has been through much upheaval in its 120-year history, and it takes a multitude of talents to maintain its integrity - preserving the structure, collecting the stories and sharing its history with others.

Joy and Chuck Lynn recently decided to "retire" to West Virginia to be the caretakers of this amazing building.

I am a stickler for customer service.   The other day, I was considering changing cell phone service.  I went to a major carrier's store and stood for 20 minutes waiting for service.  For me, 20 minutes is a long time but I was seriously considering the switch.  I left there without speaking to a representative or getting any information.

I then went to my cell phone store.  "Hey, Scott" they said.  "Be right with you."

Needless to say, I am not switching.

Customer service-wise, a great feature we have on our website is called Live Chat.

I've been reading the ACE blog all summer, and I'm finally making my dive into the world of blogging. I'm Brianna Jackson, Adventure Consultant extraordinaire and outdoor junkie.

I would say it's in my blood, but my mom didn't become a raft guide until I was older. If it is in our blood, it's a recessed gene that must be discovered.

My mother, Tracy Jackson, found her niche here at ACE as a river guide. In contrast, I am a sampler of everything, master of nothing. I love rafting, hiking, mountain biking, the zip lines, swimming, caving — the list never ends.

I have spent several summers employed as an Adventure Consultant. If guests ask if I am from the area, I emphatically reply that, yes, I am local. This is my home; I love West Virginia.

Midsummer at ACE and all is well.  It is better than that, actually.  It is great.

We are busy with families and Scout troops and church groups.  Working in the office, I talk to A LOT of people.  And my phone calls are usually in depth — I share and guests share back.

I was going for my usual 2:00 lunch break walk the other day and struck up a conversation with a guest.  She was so impressed with everything.  It was so nice to hear that in person.

As the conversation went on, I realized I had booked her trip.  She mentioned that she was grilling steaks that night.    I stopped her immediately.

I am a huge fan of the Dining Lodge – as my previous blogs can attest.

Luckily, here at ACE we have another dining option, The Lost Paddle Bar and Grill.

Outside you will regularly see raft guides and guests hanging out and playing cornhole.

(Cornhole is like a more redneck version of horseshoes.  As a redneck, I can use the word so no one gets offended or writes back with a nasty comment.)
