Great people having a great time
in the GREAT outdoors!

I'm very fortunate to be allowed to live at ACE year round, and winter is one of my favorite times of the year.  Crowds of hungry birds, flying squirrels and other critters replace the many guests. When the snow flies, it is unbelievably quiet here.

If we get too much snow, the ACE crew clears the roads on property so everyone can get in and out, and the highway department does a fantastic job of keeping the road into ACE cleared.

And I, too, have my own hot tub — sitting in your own, private hot tub while the wind and snow are blowing all around you is a magical experience.

This guest post is by Dave Pollard from the New River Birding and Nature Festival, held annually here in the New River Gorge.

Bird Nerds, Botanists, Nature Lovers, and those just seeking serenity will be pleased to hear the New River Birding and Nature Festival will return April 26 — May 1 this year.

I was out mapping the Thurmond-Minden Trail the other day and discovered the rock formation known as McKinley Rock. The National Park Service must have cleaned it up because, a few years back, it was covered in vines to the point it was unrecognizable.

The story ...
 Sept 6th, 1901 ...

Our friend Mark Piggott from the public affairs office at the Naval Weapons Station in Yorktown, Va., not only helped organize one heck of an adventure race for a couple hundred soldiers, he followed it up by writing a doozy of a guest blog post for us. Here's Mark's report:

Cold, rainy and muddy conditions would not deter the 54 teams competing in the Mid-Atlantic Region, Morale, Welfare and Recreation (MWR) Department's 9th annual all-military Wilderness Challenge, Oct. 8-10.

More than 250 military personnel representing commands from all across the armed forces competed in five grueling extreme outdoor events in the heart of the Appalachian Mountains on the New and the Gauley Rivers in West Virginia.

The "Dale Milton Racing" team from the 24th Marine Expeditionary Unit, Camp Lejune, N.C., was 1st place winner for the Marine Corps and the 2009 Wilderness Challenge champions. According to Maj. Keith Parrella, the team captain, the challenge plays on the real-life teamwork that Marines and other military service members rely on.

Blooming dogwood flowers at ACE beach

This past weekend was perfect, upper 60s and sunny. I took the kids down in the New River Gorge, to ACE's private river access, a giant sandy beach where driftwood and "human treasure" collect after high river levels drop.

You see, "human treasure" is a term my 10-year-old came up with a long time ago - basically, anything man-made that he finds (bottles, bottle caps, tennis balls, lighters, etc.) is considered human treasure, and like most 10-year-old boys, he has the habit of picking things up that probably shouldn't be picked up!
