When I went rafting the other day, as we were on the bus heading to the river, all I could think about was who was going to be on my raft with us.

I think it is safe to say I have a big personality. And one of my oldest friends, Rett, was with me. He is 6 feet, 6 inches tall with the personality to match. I was nervous. Sometimes, we can be too much. Too loud. Too everything. As a staff member, though, I am always on my best behavior on trips. I even make sure all of the other guests have eaten lunch before I dig in.

There are a lot of cool animals and insects along the New River and, unfortunately, we don’t see or appreciate many of them. It’s not that we’re oblivious, it’s just that the whitewater usually keeps our attention most of the day. In my first years of guiding, I was afraid to look away from the water, my boat, my trip leader and those sorts of things.

But now, I’m making it a point to take in more scenery (without totally neglecting my responsibilities, of course!).

We understand that everyone who comes to ACE is looking for something different.

Some people want a scenic, relaxing trip. Others want a high-adrenaline, Class V thrill ride. And there are still those who want to tour the Gorge to understand more about our history, geology and beautiful landscape.

One of my favorite parts of ACE’s Lower New Whitewater Rafting trip is Swimmer’s Rapids. In the middle of the summer when the sun is blaring down, there is nothing better than floating in the middle of the river. It is so refreshing and relaxing.

The one hiccup, getting back into the raft. On my previous trips, I simply would be a limp, dead carp and let my guide hoist me in my PFD. Alyson, my guide, gave us a concise 101 course in getting back in. Maybe I should have paid more attention. Maybe I should not have let the spry 19-year-olds get back into the raft first.

I just returned from a business trip in Shanghai, China. Short (duration), long (19-plus hour flight each way) trip but I got the opportunity to meet up with an ACE alumni.

Robin Wong is a consultant for many U.S. trade groups including the Southern United States Trade Association (SUSTA) and the Alaska Seafood Council. He works with these groups to identify potential export markets for U.S. products in his country of more than 1.3 billion people.

Next week, I turn 41 and I finally think that working at ACE has tapped into my inner outdoorsman. I feel like my mid-life crisis has taken a turn toward granola. No red convertible for me. My shiny new red riding lawn mower is enough.

Not known for my coordination, the riding lawn mower came with a class from my brother, Eric. He’s the burly one. I listened, kept my mouth shut and waited for the question and answer part of the lesson.

Most people find West Virginia and its wilderness to be foreign territory, and have loads of questions about the area and the river. Some are justifiably curious, with others I have a hard time keeping a straight face. Here are some of the most common questions a guide fields on a daily basis:

1) If someone falls out of the boat, do you just stop and pick them up?
