Capt. William D. (Dabney) Thurmond died at his home in Minden last Saturday (May 19, 1910) evening at 6:30 o’clock. The funeral services were conducted Monday afternoon by the Rev. Fitzgerald, the interment following immediately afterwards at the Thurmond family burial grounds in Minden.

Capt. Thurmond was one of the best known characters in the New River Field. He came to Fayette County in 1842 (age 22) from Amherst County, Va., where he was born. He soon saw the advantages of Fayette County and invested in real estate, from which he derived a large fortune.

I'm very fortunate to be allowed to live at ACE year round, and winter is one of my favorite times of the year.  Crowds of hungry birds, flying squirrels and other critters replace the many guests. When the snow flies, it is unbelievably quiet here.

If we get too much snow, the ACE crew clears the roads on property so everyone can get in and out, and the highway department does a fantastic job of keeping the road into ACE cleared.

And I, too, have my own hot tub — sitting in your own, private hot tub while the wind and snow are blowing all around you is a magical experience.

Another map,  another blog.

My last blog, "How Do You Map A Zip-Line Canopy Tour?", talked about the difficulty of trying to map out our Zip-Line Canopy Tour, dealing with the rugged terrain and cliffs that surrounds it, and the new zip-lines we are adding this year.  This map was totally different.  It was easy to create.

ACE offers a guided mountain bike tour called the Scenic New River Mountain Bike Tour. It is a half-day ride that 95% downhill!  You don't find trails any easier than that.  So if you haven't ridden in a while, or you have young ones, then this is the trip for you.

Now, you're more than welcome to do this trip on your own — after all, you can download the map now!

For the past several years, some classmates of mine from Virginia High School in Bristol, VA have been coming to ACE for what we call our mini reunions. We were all members of the class of 1970 - yes, we're old!

ACE is a great place for all your outdoor activities, including Whitewater, but it's also a great place for friends to get together. With ACE's Deluxe Chalets, Cozy Cabins and other lodging options, it's easy to organize a party or reunion. It's a great location for people coming from different states, and allows everyone to have privacy in their own cabin or share one of our larger units.

The reunions with my classmates have really allowed us to reconnect after many years,...
