Editor's Note: Meet Shallon.  She visited ACE Adventure Resort last summer with her Girl Scout troop. Her mother wrote us a letter about their trip. We hope you enjoy it.  Do you have a great vacation story?  We'd love for you to share it with us.

ACE Adventure Resort,

This letter is long overdue but I'm just getting around to writing it.  I wanted to express my appreciation for the programs and staff at ACE Adventure Resort.  I visited with my daughter's Girl Scout troop back in June.  We had a group of about 22 from Michigan on our annual trip down to ACE.

For my daughter and I, this is our second year.  We once again thoroughly enjoyed our rafting trip (this year with Puppy), zip-lining and my daughter also loved the horseback riding again.

There's something to be said for this high-adventure activity, but mostly for the wonderful staff that make this so fun, challenging and purely enjoyable.  ACE has such a special place in our hearts for what they have to offer.  You see, my daughter, Shallon, who turned 19, has Down Syndrome.

When people speak of camping, I scoff.  It is truly a foreign language to me.  And I speak to gung-ho campers daily.  But it doesn't stick.

They love the outdoor cooking.  The tent sleeping.  The fresh morning air.  Say what?

I am trying to camp at the end of August and am really conflicted about it.  My friends, Katie and Phil, are bringing a group, and I feel the peer pressure to camp.  2 nights.  Outdoors.  Help.

Working in the whitewater industry we get a few perks, such as being able to offer our families the opportunities to raft with us when they come to visit their kids who have defected from the North.

I’m one of those kids, and my mom comes at least once a year to raft with us.

My mom is fit, attractive, has a killer wardrobe, and swears that broccoli can cure any and all ailments.  She’s also always up for trying new things, even if it does make her a little nervous.

My mom’s first rafting trip was on the Lower New River. She was all for it, and very excited.  I would never use the word clumsy if I were to describe my mom, but that is exactly what I will use when describing my mother while whitewater rafting.

Golden girls canopy tours

Should age be an issue when coming to ACE? Can you be too old for anything?

Last summer, my mother and her posse of friends decided they wanted to do the Zipline Canopy Tour. An estrogen filled "Bucket List," if you will.

They are in their late 50s/early 60s and not the most athletic bunch. They are not your typical retirees wearing neon pink velour track suits, walking laps at the mall. You will not see them on their scooters talking on their Jitterbug phones any time soon. They all go to church together. They are a fun bunch, but I was unsure of the impetus for this decision. Maybe it was divine inspiration, so I just went with it.

Our genetic makeup does not contain the athletic gene, so I approached this trip with skepticism and a bit of sarcasm. Ma Perdue does not get dirty. She does not sweat. She is not an active person. She enjoys looking at nature but not being involved in nature.

The ladies were a mixture of body types. Some thicker. Some thinner. A pretty good cross-section of who could do this trip.

We met our guide, Phil, at the Climbing Barn to gear up. To do this activity, you have to wear a full body harness. There were straps going everywhere. They were more concerned about being cute than being safe. Mom's harness was making her pants ride into her crotch - a very uncomfortable mother/son moment, possibly a Lifetime TV movie in the making. Sheila put the helmet on backwards. Natalie was a nervous wreck. And Ruth wanted photo documentation of it all.

We go to the first line. We hike down. That alone was hilarious. I was overly concerned about them. I didn't want anyone to fall and break a hip. It was like watching a newborn bobble while taking his first steps and waiting for him to fall.
