My name is Margie and I have epilepsy. It sounds like a dirty little secret when so simply put, which is how I have felt about my seizures for most of my life.

I don't like divulging this one major health problem of mine even to close friends. I can't take the sympathetic looks and cooing reassurances from people who don't know what it's like to wake up in an ambulance with EMTs shouting rapid-fire questions.

Waldo, here. Yup, it’s true, ACE and the stables are my retirement home. See, the New River Gorge is the Grand Canyon of the East, but I got my “professional” start in the Grand Canyon in Arizona.

I kid you not. See, mules as trail and pack animals have a long history in the Grand Canyon National Park. For more than 100 years, we have been the best way for thousands of park visitors to venture into the canyon and visit Phantom Ranch, one of the main tourist destinations.

Most of us have only been on the guest side of renting a cabin. You show up and everything is there, ready to go. But who's behind the scenes making sure that your unit is in tip-top shape? After all, folks move in and out every week and sometimes every day.  Needless to say, it takes its toll on furnishings and amenities.

Well, a few folks at ACE have been toiling over one particular reoccurring cabin issue - hot tub covers. Yes, they are a thorn in the side of many guests because they are heavy and hard to move while attempting to enjoy the hot tub. And for ACE staff, they just don't hold up to expectation and require lots of repairs. In the past four years, we've spent thousands of dollars replacing hot tub covers to try to keep them at least functional for our guests. Well, no more!

I'm very fortunate to be allowed to live at ACE year round, and winter is one of my favorite times of the year.  Crowds of hungry birds, flying squirrels and other critters replace the many guests. When the snow flies, it is unbelievably quiet here.

If we get too much snow, the ACE crew clears the roads on property so everyone can get in and out, and the highway department does a fantastic job of keeping the road into ACE cleared.

And I, too, have my own hot tub — sitting in your own, private hot tub while the wind and snow are blowing all around you is a magical experience.

I know it seems a bit far off, but before you know it, spring will be here.  At least, that's what I'm telling myself.  I personally have already been tracking the sun from my window perch as it rises and sets across the sky here in the New River Gorge of West Virginia

Yes, the days are getting longer despite what the temperature, gusting winds and drifting snow are telling us.

So, as I look forward to spring, one of the first events of the season for ACE is Trail Maintenance Weekends.  This year, we have them scheduled for April 10-11 and April 17-18.
