Trip Description
Guided Zip Line Canopy Tours in the lush forests of West Virginia
Trip Highlights:
ACE's Canopy Tour is one of our most popular adventures, an exceptional fun and thrilling experience suitable for first-timers. Located in the heart of the New River Gorge, our network of zip-lines takes you "cliffside", to our private rock climbing areas where you can zip from cliff to cliff; soaring bird-like through the air, experiencing spectacular scenery and overlooks. From our many perches you can actually look down into the gorge - more than 800 feet below. Our system of zip-lines are designed to use a gravity braking system, which means it's hands-free and worry free. You don't have to worry about stopping yourself - just enjoy the freedom of flying through the air Peter Pan style. You zip along at a variety of speeds (*personal weight plays a part in the speeds generated) in padded, full body harnesses for a comfortable ride. Are you ready for the exhilaration of soaring through the trees on a zip-line canopy tour? Trip Details: Each zip has its own personality - making each ride its own adventure:After fitting your equipment and leaving the Climbing Barn, a short 5-minute drive on property takes you out to the Climbing Area where our Zip-Line Canopy Tour begins. We will start out on our practice zip, only a few feet off the ground for hands-on instruction and get you comfortable with the equipment. Zip 1: The first zip, perched on top of our Entrance Climbing Area, is just over 200' long and 40' high. It is calibrated (angled) for moderate speeds, giving you a great introduction to this new experience. There is a great overlook here into the Rush Run Canyon and the Gorge. Wintertime provides the best views into the gorge. Zip 2: The second zip steps it up with a much steeper angle. It takes you flying through the air on a 240' breathtaking ride from White Wall to Natural Arch rock formations. Clinging to the cliffs nearly 60' in the air, you will pass right next to a giant old Hemlock, affectionately known as Graybeard. There are two spectacular overlooks here. The more scenic one provides an excellent view of Historic Thurmond, an old railroad town with legendary history and characters; it's the last town still surviving in the gorge. The other overlook peers downstream into the gorge, toward Fire Creek where the ruins of many old ghost towns can be found along the river's edge. Zip 3: This is a challenging 140' zip that takes you out to Crows Nest, a tree platform located over 60' in the air, giving you a fantastic birds-eye view of your surroundings. This is one of the most popular landings where you will clip directly into the next zip. Zip 4: The "Leap-of-Faith" zip begins once you jump off Crows Nest perch, speeding you 145' toward the Middle Earth Climbing Area. There are huge overhangs and tall climbing routes here that many thrilled guests have used to learn to rock climb. Zip 5: Over 135' feet long, this is our shortest zip with one of our more intersting landings due to the steep cliff lines surrounding it. From here it is a short hike to "The Plunge" Zip. Zip 6: THE PLUNGE! Featured on the Travel Channel, this is our most popular zip by far. As you climb the short steps up to the launching platform, you will see why. At well over 350' long, this unique zip starts out with you sitting on the edge of the launching platform. When you feel comfortable enought, you will slide off the edge and drop (or take the plunge) into the air, only to be caught by the zip-line as you scream (literally) toward the bottom. Our fastest and highest zip, 60' plus, you will fly past the landing platform and soar back up into the air (by design) until gravity slows you down and returns you back towards the landing. When you finally stop, we will roll out our giant ladder on wheels and help you back down to earth. Zip 7: The last zip is a steep ride that offers speeds similar to The Plunge. Only 20' feet off the ground, this 300' zip parallels the gorge, landing you at our River Road Climbing Area. Another great overlook here let's you look over the edge to the climbing area below. A short hike up to the road ends your incredible adventure of soaring through the trees - something you will never forget? COMING SOON:Zip 8, Zip 9 and More: For those of you who wanted more... here you go. We will be doubling our canopy tour this year! Not only that, it will be something special. One zip will be over 1,200' feet long and hundreds of feet in the air. When ACE created the first canopy tour in the state we wanted something different - something unique. With 1,500-acres we had plenty of options. In ACE fashion, we planned to build our canopy tour in stages, with the vision of making it the biggest and the best. Stage One started out on our private cliffs along the side of the gorge - no one can do that. Stage Two this year will be phenomenal - we will cross and re-cross the Rush Run Canyon! There will be nothing like it. We will also be adding zips the other way towards Concho Overlook. Beyond 2010... Stage Three and Stage Four are already designed and planned - we plan to keep adding to it until it is the most incedible canopy tour in the country. There will be some surprise that will blow you away!
