The New River Gorge National Park is home to some of the finest rock climbing and rappelling in the East. It’s the perfect place for your climbing experience.

If you’re a novice, try our 1/2-day and full-day introductory climbs. Our experiential trips get you right out onto the rock! Your professional guide will make sure you’re safe and your equipment and ropes are properly rigged, and then the fun begins! Experienced climbers will appreciate the famous New River Gorge with over 1,600 routes.

Rock Climbing In The New River Gorge

With over 1,600 unique routes and hundreds of hidden crags and boulder-fields, the New River Gorge is a popular climber's destination. More and more people are escaping the pressures of urban life with active weekend activities like rock climbing. Youths gravitate towards rock climbing as an alternative to traditional team sports. Still others pursue rock climbing as a full-time passion, building their lives around the sport. Our rock climbing school is designed to meet the needs of an ever expanding community of people who possess a wide assortment of experiences and objectives.

There are certain skills essential to safe rock climbing. Before learning the advanced techniques and radical movements, a climber should learn how to recognize, anticipate and counter the inherent risks involved.

The Progressive, Building Block Method

Rock climbing should be learned and taught from the ground up in order to manage the wide array of hazards and techniques involved in the different disciplines that comprise modern rock climbing. You must have a firm grasp of the essential skills and an understanding that people progress at different rates, yet the knowledge required of each individual climber remains constant.

With ACE's progressive building block method we start from the ground up. Our Beginner Experience climbs are designed for the absolute beginner who has never been rock climbing at all and would like to sample the sport with a minimal investment in time and gear. The Fundamental Instruction courses start with the foundation skills needed to climb safely and with confidence and our Intermediate coursesbrings out the essence and adventure of true rock climbing as you learn to multi-pitch climb on the beautiful cliffs of West Virginia. Finally, in our Advanced courses, you will learn to lead climb and to teach others the sport that you have grown to love. For people who have climbing experience and would like to expand their knowledge, our building block method allows us to assess your current abilities and place you in a course that will meet your needs and abilities.
