News Advisory
FALL MEDIA MONTH AT ACE ADVENTURE RESORT
October 1-31, 2013

Have you ever thought about shooting an interview on a cliff face? How about while barreling down a zip line? Or while cruising through a forested tunnel atop an ATV? To bolster fall travel in the New River Gorge, we're opening our 1,500-acre resort to select members the news media in October. If you're looking for exemplary shots of the gorge in autumn, we'll provide gear, guides, and tech support you'll need through November 1, 2013.

All you'll need is to reserve a time so our staff can be on hand to guide your expedition. We'll also be happy to provide lodging for you or your crew members, depending on our capacity. Gauley Season at Bridge Day also fall during the period, and we're more likely to have vacancies on weekdays.

Please let me know at least a week in advance of your interested visit date and possible interview and shooting scenarios.

Sincerely,

Beth Gill

To make coordination easier, here are some scenarios we've considered, though we welcome you to expand on these or think entirely outside the box:

Rock Climbing -- We're able to guide journalists up or down the face of our private climbing walls. They are natural, sixty-foot sandstone outcroppings that rim the New River Gorge. Dual lines may be set to accommodate an additional camera operator.

Zip Lining -- Our mile-long network of zip-lines famously follows the rim of the New River Gorge along rocky outcrops perched 500-800 feet above the New River. We can help arrange portage for equipment along zip lines, and since lines are dual, camera operator can film subject while both are in motion. Stunning views of the gorge are afforded along the route.

Biking/Hiking Trails -- More than 25 miles of woodland trail wander the resort's back-country, visiting waterfalls, scenic overlooks, and the ruins of old forgotten mining towns. Though some trails are narrow and steep, we can accommodate ATV portage to many shooting locations with advanced notice.

ATV Touring -- Designated all-terrain vehicle trails traverse part of the resort, plunging through muddy tracks and leaping mounds along the way. We'll be happy to arrange access to some of our best ATV points-of-interest.

Team-Building Facilities -- Our mud obstacle course, our five-story alpine tower, and a two-field paintball complex are among the principal landmarks in our team-building retinue. All provide for plenty of entertaining footage. While fewer participants will be on these courses this time of year, there still may be opportunities to catch them in use. Of course, with advanced notice, we do welcome members of the media to participate free of charge.

---

NOTE: Because our property ranges across the highlands west of the New River Gorge and descends to meet the New River, a full range of autumn leaf color is available through much of the period. The most brilliant reds are likely to appear earlier in the upper resort. The leaf fall always comes last along the warm banks of the river in late October.

---

DIRECTIONS: The American Canadian Expeditions (ACE) Resort is located at "1 Concho Road, Minden, WV 25879," near the Summit Bechtel National Scout Reserve (though many of our releases are disseminated from our communications department near the New River Gorge in Fayetteville, W.Va.)

Approximate drive-times from cities in our principal market area include Pittsburgh, 3.45 hours; Cleveland, Ohio, 5 hours; Columbus, Ohio, 4 hours; Cincinnati, Ohio, 4.5 hours; Louisville, Ky., 5 hours; Charlotte, N.C., 3.5 hours; Nashville, Tenn. 7 hours; Atlanta, Ga., 7 hours, Savannah, Ga., 7 hours; Virginia Beach, Va., 5.4 hours.; Washington, D.C., five hours; New York, NY, 8 hours, Buffalo, N.Y., seven hours.

Boat Types

raft-comparrison-chartRafts: ACE offers three different rafts sizes to customize your rafting experience. Going smaller is actually the biggest ride! Double check the minimum age difference when deciding the type of ride you want.

  • 16-foot Raft: This is the Industry Standard Raft that seats 8+ guests and a guide. They are the largest rafts we have, offering the most stable and comfortable ride. They are also the most economical raft we have and are ideal for groups and first-time rafters.
  • 14-foot Raft: This is our High Adventure Raft that seats 6+ guests and a guide. Smaller than the 16-foot raft, these rafts are very reactive in the white water! Lighter and more manuverable, these rafts give guests more thrills and spills, putting you right in the thick of the action. This is our most popular raft and well worth the extra money. Minimum age 14.
  • 12-foot Raft: This is our Extreme Raft that seats 4+ guests and a guide. You would be amazed how many crazy people want this raft! It's almost 100% guaranteed you will be swimming. Minimum age is 18, previous experience highly recommended, strong swimming skills highly recommend and a desire to push the limits of white water rafting. This is the smallest commercial raft available on the river!

Duckies: ACE offers two different type of Duckies. What is a Duckie? A cross between a canoe and kayak, these inflatable play boats are stable, lightweight, highly maneuverable and easy to paddle. They are a blast and are our most popular crafts on the Upper New and the Summer Gauley Trips.

We offer Single and Tandem Duckies. So you can either go it a lone or have a friend ride along with you. You must be at least 10 years old to paddle your own duckie. Parents, guiding your own duckie down the river with one of your children with you is a magically memeory your children will always cherish! Duckies are not allowed on the Lower New section.

Craftmanship: All of our rafts are custom built, high-tech, self-bailing rafts (that means the water automatically runs out of the raft without you having to bail the boats). They are multi-chamber rafts that stay afloat even if we lose air in one of the chambers - a rare event with modren rafts. Cross tubes, also called thwarts, lay across the middle of the raft and connect the outer tubes of the rafts and are also separate compartments. Thwarts provide two important functions: lateral stability of the raft and a means to “brace in”. Bracing in is a way to use your legs and feet as a means to provide personal stability while going through rapids. One leg is pressed against the tube in front and the other leg is pressed against the tube behind you. By pressing out and against the tubes, you essentially wedge yourself in with your bottom placed on top of the outer tube. You use your legs to absorb the bouncing of the raft, much like riding a bike through bumpy terrain. Your guides will give you safety instructions throughout your journey.

West Virginia’s Fall Whitewater Season

Screen Shot 2013-09-10 at 2.13.30 PMGAULEY RIVER RAFTING

The Gauley River is known the world over as some of the best fall rafting in the country. Why you ask?

While other rivers are but a trickle in the fall, the lake above the Gauley is lowered in September and October to prepare for winter rain and snow melt.

Instead of letting that water rush down the river without even a hello-how-are-you, we’ve created an entire season for the event. That’s Gauley Season!

Choose Between 2 River Sections

The Gauley is divided into two river sections. Equal in every way except intensity level, you can choose to raft just one section or tackle them both. The Upper is more challenging, while the Lower is perfect for adventurous first-timers.

Upper Gauley – EXTREME
Lower Gauley – EPIC

*Special offer features the 16’/8+ person raft – good all Gauley rafting dates – available on new reservations only – offer may not be combined with other discounts or promotions and applies to each river section – price does not include sales tax or user fee.

West Virginia Adventure Resort Since 1979

A word to the wise – wind-in-your-hair freedom and adrenaline-charged outdoor adventure activities will plaster a smile on your face that’s ten-miles wide. And cruising the pages of this website is only recommended for those who are ready to envision the time of their lives.

So you’re still reading? You’re probably thinking you can resist the lure of West Virginia’s whitewater rafting on the New and Gauley rivers and the way these mountains energize just like the tingling fizz from an ice-cold fountain pop. You’re forgetting how much the sights and sounds of the outdoors will stand out in contrast to the hollow echo of office walls, the honking horns of gridlock and that neighbor’s yapping dog. You’re probably telling yourself you can quit anytime - that you can resist all-inclusive, super-convenient packages and a thousand different activities to please everyone on your roster.

You know what they say about denial.

Wild places and exciting times have a way of sticking with you to the point you just can’t shake it. We’ve seen it happen many times. Some abandon their families — just another “girls’ weekend out,” they say. Some quit their “real” jobs and move to West Virginia – how do you think we get our guide staff?

No intervention yet has proven successful at getting these adventure addicts to go back to their old ways. If it didn’t make them happy and healthy, we’d be really worried.

But, regardless, the Surgeon General still makes us include a word of CAUTION — The repeated use of ACE Adventure Resort for prescribed purposes of outdoor adventure vacations has been shown to be habit-forming. Even proper use of ACE may induce side effects such as uncontrollable laughter, intense happiness, family-togetherness, excited-osis and acute relaxation.

You are now free to leave this page. You’ve been warned!

Trail Maintenance Weekend

April 26-27, 2014

Trail MaintenanceWhat would you do for a FREE two-night stay in an ACE Cozy Cabin? OK, free might be a stretch. We need your help and are offering a handsome reward.

Simply donate some of your precious time and maybe break a sweat to help the ACE crew maintain its biking and hiking trails, and we supply a cabin complete with satellite TV, full kitchen and private hot tub. Mother Nature is not always kind to the West Virginia hills so we like to rally the troops to clean things up before the season starts.

As a weekend crew member, work starts on Saturday 9 a.m. - 4 p.m. Sunday, the crew works from 9 a.m. - noon. At the end of each day, we'll take a mountain bike ride to give you a preview cruise of your efforts.

This is a great way to kick-start the season. Call 800-787-3982 to make your reservation.

A $25 deposit is required to hold your cabin for the weekend. It is refundable upon completion of your trail work. If you find you are unable to attend, this deposit is refundable by contacting us at least two weeks prior to your arrival date. Per the security agreement deluxe cabins require a credit card on file.

Due to an unforeseen issue when processing your payment, we are not able to guarantee your reservation at this time.

We recommend that you call your bank and/or credit card company to discuss why it was declined. The most common reasons for a declined transaction relate to security features that are in place to protect you from fraud -- spending limits, controls on out of state purchases, etc.

If you have any questions, please call us at 800-787-3982.

What do you do in the off-season: Travel - this Winter we are riding a motorcycle to South America. It varies.

Favorite thing about West Virginia: Community. I'll tell you a story. The summer before I came to Ace I was working on a commercial Salmon boat in Alaska. One day a tourist rented a boat and some crab traps - he set the traps in the fishing grounds of a Russian family. The family first asked the gentleman nicely to move his traps as they were in their fishing grounds and they were trying to make a living. Indignent, the tourist refused. The second time the fisherman asked they weren't as happy. The third time they had to ask they did so with their sidearms. The tourist immediately took off to the state police boat for assistance. He was advised by the sate police "It looks like youíre out numbered to me." I like that. West Virginia has that - community - doing wrong by the community is enough of a reason not to do wrong.
