Fall on the New River

October is a great month to raft the New. The New has a lot going for it once the leaves begin to turn. From a raft the annual Fall foliage display in the New River Gorge is something you'll have to see to believe. The 1,000-foot high canyon walls explode with color in a riotous display that rival's the very best of New England's foliage.. You'll have the river to yourself as you drift through the canyon taking in the sights and enjoying a day on the water as well.

Fall water levels are typically low. That means that just about anyone can enjoy a relaxing day on the river. The Upper New's rapids are very mild, Class II mostly, and are great for the whole family-including kids and grandparents. The rapids on the Lower New are still kicking and there's lots of time to enjoy all the surf holes since the rest of the rafting world is over on the Gauley.

Here in West Virginia, we enjoy those cool, crisp autumn days right through the whole month of October. And, since the New's water is coming up from down South, the water temperatures stay very comfortable well into the Fall season.
