TRIP OVERVIEW Rock Climbing and Rappelling in the New River GorgeRock climbing is about walking on your fingers and toes in a vertical world. Ask a climber who's traveled this great country in search of prime climbing and they'll tell you about the New River Gorge in West Virginia. Peering up at a 60-foot wall of sandstone, the thought of hoisting yourself onto the rock may seem a bit foreign. Once you make that first move, though, it’s about getting your balance and shifting your weight to find just the right holds that make sense. What goes up, must come down. That’s rappelling. As you prepare to lower yourself over the edge of the cliff, you’ll feel a nice little tug on the body and some experience a rush of butterflies. But once your legs are in position and your braking hand is comfortably wrapped around your hip, it’s a smooth ride all the way to the bottom.
