Skill Builders Checklist
    • In the presence of an ACE instructor, do at least five different stretches to prepare the muscles you will be using for biking
    • Present your own personalized mountain biking workout showing principles to follow based on safety and the types of weather and terrain you may encounter.  Principles should include the following:
      • Safety
        • Knowing to always wear a helmet, make sure that your brakes are aligned and in good repair, and check the tire pressure on both wheels
        • Knowing to always ride with the traffic on the far right hand side of the street, unless you are preparing to make a left-handed turn
        • Knowing to always signal your stopping and turns so that drivers can anticipate your actions
        • Knowledge of the vehicle codes for the state in which you will cycle
        • Demonstrate Hand Signals
        • Execute basic bike maneuvers such as braking and turns to avoid an obstacle
      • Weather
        • What to wear and take along, layering
      • Terrain
        • Looking at an ACE trail map, plan and take part in a bike trip.  Map out routes that avoid heavily trafficked areas or pavements unsuitable to biking
Technology
Attend a clinic on cycle maintenance and repair that goes over bicycle repair, including repairs to the following:  tires, braking system, wheels, spokes, hubs, derailleur, headset, stem, handlebars, seat, and drive train.  Demonstrate your ability to change a flat tire.
Service Project Suggestions
 Take part in an ACE Trail Maintenance Weekend.  This is the perfect opportunity to contribute to the sport of mountain biking all the while increasing your biking Karma point total. This weekend of education and camaraderie will lift your spirits as we work on trails located in the New River Gorge area. We will provide 2 free nights in bunkhouses, trail construction tools and instruction.  Available weekends in April, May, late-October and November.
