General Game Play

The Wonderland Disc Golf Course has a great design. Half the course is in the woods, ideal during those hot summer days and the other half is in the open fields, perfect on the colder days. The course is 6,145 - 5,826 feet long, with a great mix of challenging and open flight paths. It can be a good workout with the elevation changes. Bathrooms are located at the Blackberry Campground; close the number 8 and 18 tees.

The object of the game of disc golf is to traverse a course from beginning to end in the fewest throws of the disc. The competitor who plays the stipulated round or rounds in the fewest throws is the winner.

Play on each hole begins at the teeing area and ends at the target (basket). After the player has thrown from the tee, each successive throw is made from where the previous throw came to rest. On completing a hole, the player proceeds to the teeing area of the next hole, until all holes have been played.

Disc golf courses are normally laid out in and around wooded areas with diverse terrain to provide natural obstacles to the flight of the disc. These natural obstacles are very much a part of the game and must not be altered by a player in any way to decrease the difficulty of a hole. Players must play the course as they find it and play the disc where it lies unless allowed otherwise by fellow players.

Doubles Rules and Formats

In the Best Shot, Tough Shot, and Best Disc formats, you do not throw if it is mathematically impossible for you to improve your team's score on a hole. In the Best Shot and Tough Shot formats, the second player does not throw if the first player has holed out. If you are playing Best Disc format and your partner has holed out, you do not throw unless you can improve on your partner's score. Any throw made which cannot possibly improve a team's score on a hole is a practice throw.

The formats described below may be extended beyond doubles (to triples, etc) if desired. Large groups should break up into smallers groups or be aware of play time and allow smaller groups to pass you.

Best Shot

Best Shot is by far the most popular doubles format. Both players throw from each lie (starting with the tee shot), then the team chooses which of the resulting lies to continue play from, until the hole is completed.

Worst Shot

Worst Shot is the most brutal of the doubles formats, and can test the patience of even the best teams. In Worst Shot, both players throw from each lie (starting with the tee shot), then the competing teams in the group choose which of the subsequent lies will be used, with the aim of making the hole as difficult as possible. The hole is completed once both team members have holed out from the same lie.

Tough Shot

Tough Shot is the same as Worst Shot, with the following variation: once a player on the team has holed out, the team has completed the hole.

Alternate Shot

In Alternate Shot, only one sequence of throws is made on each hole. The team selects a player to throw the tee shot at the beginning of the round. The other player then throws from the subsequent lie, and play alternates in that fashion until the round is completed. Alternate Shot is closer to a singles format, where one partner can't bail the other out. If you miss a short putt, chances are good that you'll be driving the next hole.

Best Disc (Best Score)

In Best Disc (also known as Best Score), each player plays the hole as they would while playing singles; there are no shared lies. The team score is the best score on the hole by one of its players.

MORE INFO

This course has several obstacles that require the team to work together to complete tasks.

What to Wear:

  • Shorts and t-shirt that you don’t mind getting wet and muddy
  • Closed toed shoes that can get dirty on the trek to the course
  • Tight strap for glasses if you have to wear them
  • Insect Repellent
  • *And don't forget your waterproof camera!

ACE Provides:

  • Wetsuit – to put over your shorts and t-shirt
  • Booties (wetsuit shoes) since the mud will pull your shoes right off your feet
  • A muddy good time

Since the course is so, well, muddy, here's a heads up:

  • If you don’t want it to get dirty, don’t bring it
  • Jewelry, keys, watches, and electronics are a bad idea
  • If you can go without your glasses or contacts, this is the time - you can bring goggles
  • If someone is not participating, they are welcome to tag along and take pictures

What to Expect:

Here's the muddy, event-by-event rundown of what you can expect to find out there in the mud:

  • The Mud Obstacle Course was designed as a teambuilding activity (but it is also just fun to wade through) where teams of at least 5 each can compete against each other in the mud, mud and more mud. It is set up in two lines so that two teams can compete head-to-head.
  • Teamwork is the key to success as you battle your way throught these entertaining events.
  • With all the splashing and mud flying, goggles might not be a bad idea...

Commando Crawl

  • This first event is designed to get rid of all your mud inhibitions! Assuming a low crawling position on your hands and knees, you will race your way under a series of ropes and nets about 70-feet long. There is a lot of splashing and flying mud - It's a great muddy begining. Be careful, too much laughing and you might be tasting the mud!
  • After the initial "Mud Shock" you will be ready for anything put in your path.

Over/Under

  • 80-feet long, you will attempt to maneuver over and under slippery, slimy and muddy logs to the end. It is very common to get a face full if your not careful - we call it "Getting some ACE in your face!" This is one of the most popular events that is guaranteed to getting everyone smiling... what's that in your teeth?

Slicky Slide

  • Centered in the middle of a giant mud pit, you will find a large slide that you have to attempt to climb up and over. Getting up the front side of the slide usually requires a little help from friends. Flying down the back side usually leads to a huge splash!  This event is always a big hit (splash)!

Mud Wall

  • One of the more physical events, teamwork is key here. You start off by jumping into a surprisingly deep pit, wading your way through the mud to a large wooden wall. There is a set of ropes hanging down from the top to help you climb. Get a good grip with your slippery hands and work your way up and over the top. The buddy system is critical in a race setting.

Old Fashion Mud Hole

  • Yep! Pretty self-explanatory. Jump in, wade across this 20-foot long pit to the other side and escape up a steep bank. Think of it as a spa mud treatment... no extra charge!

Balance Beams

  • This one can be a little intimadating. You will find two, spaced apart, large wooden beams, 10 inches in diameter, and 25-feet long spanning a pool. Trying to cross them without falling in... Hmmmmm, there may be a little luck involved in this accomplishment!

Lilly Pads

  • Hope you have your frog legs! Trying to leap across the murky waters (we've added several sharks in the water to make it a little more intersting - just joking) on a series a inflatable lilly pads from one side to the other without falling in can be tricky. The pads move with every little movement, making it difficult to keep your balance. Go luck with that!

Mud Rafts

  • This final event helps to clean off some of the mud. Jumping into rafts (usually upside down!) you will have to dig in and paddle yourself by hand to the end of the course. The copious amounts of splashing should make a dent in your muddy exterior, but don't count on it!

This one-of-a-kind unique adventure is one you wont forget in a long time... and your friends wont belive your stories!

The Mud Obstacle Course is perfect for:

  • Boy Scouts
  • Girl Scouts
  • Non-Profit and Church Groups
  • Corporate Teambuilding
It can also be combined with one of our other great treambuilding challenge course activities.

Teambuilding in The New River Gorge - Fun And Discovery

ACE’s team challenge program is an exciting, creative and fun way to enhance your group’s motivation and camaraderie through shared experiences. All of our programs can be adapted as necessary to meet your group’s needs and goals - to offer appropriate opportunities for learning, personal growth and positive change.

Activities are based on individual skill levels, physical abilities and psychological or emotional readiness. As facilitators, we encourage participants to go one step further, with a goal of eventually completing the activity. Even so, we follow a philosophy of “challenge by choice” that empowers participants to set personal goals and allows them to grow within their own comfort zones.  It is this commitment to each and every individual of your group that has distinguished our programs from other similar efforts.

rock-climbing

TRIP OVERVIEW

Learn Rock & Rope Climbing - Rappelling

Rock climbing is about walking on your fingers and toes in a vertical world. Ask a climber who's traveled this great country in search of prime climbing and they'll tell you about adventure vacations at the New River Gorge in West Virginia. Peering up at a 80-foot wall of sandstone, the thought of hoisting yourself onto the rock may seem a bit foreign. Once you make that first move, though, it’s about getting your balance and shifting your weight to find just the right holds that make sense.

What goes up, must come down. That’s rappelling. As you prepare to lower yourself over the edge of the cliff, you’ll feel a nice little tug on the body and some experience a rush of butterflies. But once your legs are in position and your braking hand is comfortably wrapped around your hip, it’s a smooth ride all the way to the bottom.

Paintball in West Virginia

New River Gorge Paintball

TRIP OVERVIEW

Play Paintball in the West Virginia Mountains

New Fields in 2013

You're leaning against a wall that seems just a bit too small to hide behind. Your heart is thudding in your chest and paintballs are whizzing through the air. The rest of your team is on the sideline spattered with colored paint and they're depending on you to avenge their defeat, to capture the flag, to bring home victory. Paintball is all about teamwork and keeping your wits as you work with your teammates toward your objective.

Both of our new fields are essentially "speed ball" fields that we can be played with different game formats. Our Pro Field is layed out according to the specs of a professional/competition speedball field, with matching distances inbetween, etc. Our second field has several bunkers and obstructions, including a double decker, two story bunker. Both of our fields are built with fixed/hard barricades as opposed to inflatables as on other fields for a more consistant experience.

Do you have what it takes?

Both Mountain Top Paintball and Sunset Paintball adventures include:

  • Paintball guns, pressurized gas cartridges, paintballs, masks and goggles
  • Team strategy
  • Instructional orientation
  • Referees

Here's a zip-by-zip rundown of what you can expect to find out there in the treetops:

After fitting your equipment and leaving the Climbing Barn, a short, on-property bus ride takes you to the start of our West Virginia Zip Line Tour.

  • All of our zips have dual lines so you can race your friends to the finish.
  • All of our lines are calibrated (angled) and use gravity breaks. For maximum speed, the hands free break system allows you to ball-up to go faster or spread your arms and legs out (starfish style) to slow down and adjust your speed.
  • Scenic overlooks and sight-seeing perches at all launch points and dismounts.

Zip 1: Parallel Plunge

This dual line launches you and your friends with a whopping 490-foot long zip through the trees on the rim of the New River Gorge. This line offers your first glimpse of historic Thurmond, an old railroad town with rich history and legendary characters; it is the only surviving town in the Gorge.

  • Great overlook here of the gorge, mountains and Thurmond.

Zip 2: Cruise Control

This 380-foot zip keeps the adrenaline flowing. Located on the lip of the New River Gorge, this line offers spectacular river and mountain views. From Zip 2’s dismount platform, you can see Jump Rock on the Upper New River, a guest favorite on ACE rafting trips.

  • Another great overlook of the gorge.

Zip 3: Rigor Mortis

This is one of the stars of the tour. This zip is a 680-feet long and over 100-feet above the ground. This line is also the fastest, reaching speeds of up to 40 miles-per-hour! White water rafters on the New River can see you zipping through the trees far above them, so don't forget to wave.

  •  Best view of the gorge while zipping - good luck taking a photo ;)

Zip 4: Mighty Mouse

Perched on top of our Climbing Area Entrance, this line is over 200-feet long and 40-feet high. It offers moderate speeds, giving you a great view into the Rush Run Canyon and the Gorge.

Zip 5: Sunshine

THIS IS THE WORLD RECORD ZIP = 183 PEOPLE IN ONE HOUR!

Ace Raft Zip Line Experience

This zip steps it up with a much steeper angle. It takes you flying on a 200-foot breathtaking ride from White Wall to Natural Arch rock formations. Clinging to the cliffs nearly 60-feet in the air, you will pass an old Hemlock, affectionately known as Graybeard.

  • There are two spectacular overlooks here. The first one provides an excellent view of historic Thurmond, while the other overlook peers downstream toward Fire Creek pool where the ruins of many of the old New River Gorge ghost towns can be found along the river’s edge.

Zip 6: The Racer

This is a super fun, incredibly challenging 270-foot dual zip-line that lets two people race side-by-side to the finish line. Who will have the bragging rights for the rest of your trip? You gotta zip to find out.

  • Zip Backwards if you dare! This is the only zip of its' kind in the state that gives you the options of going either forward or backward. It's a hoot.
  • This was our originial, and only, dual zip. Due to it's popularity, it was the inspiration for our complete course overhaul, making all of our zips tandem.

Wobble Bridge

A fun Swinging Bridge about one-and-a-half-feet wide, this 150-foot long wooden bridge gives adventurers a change of pace with unique views of their surroundings. It does wobble, but it has rope and cable railings on both sides. Don't worry. You'll be clipped in to the safety cable overhead the entire time.

Zip 7: Boulderdash

This is a crazy 525-foot “blind” zip. Your guides have to communicate by walkie-talkie to give the all clear because you literally can't see the end. A great thrill as you zip to who knows where...

  • Specially calibrated to maximize your speed this unique dual zip has two settings. One zip is for those weighing 130 pounds or less while the other zip is for those who weigh more than 130 pounds.
  • You can ball up to go faster or spread your arms and legs (starfish style) to slow yourself down.

Zip 8: Terminal Velocity

After a short hike (a tenth of a mile with a sustained moderate uphill grade) we come to the biggest and fastest zip of the day.  Everything else has been a warm up for this monster. At over 800-feet long and over 120-feet off the ground, this zip will blow you away as you soar across the beautiful Rush Run Canyon. There is no way to describe the pure thrill of this one. You are going to have to experience it yourself. If you dare!

Sky Bridge

This graceful suspension bridge is over 250-feet long (almost a football field), high above the cascading Rush Run Creek (a native trout stream), providing breathtaking views of the surrounding forested mountains. Maybe it's because it seems like your are floating in air, but for some reason everyone seems to whisper as they cross this bridge?

Drop Tower

At the end of the bridge you come to a really cool 55-foot tall, dual decked tree house that marks the end of your journey. Take your time as you enjoy more great views and get ready for the final zip...

Zip 9: The Plunge

The final zip is one of the most unique and thrilling. As you sit on the edge of the deck and build up enough nerve for the "leap-of-faith", dropping off the edge for that monmentary free-fall feeling and plunging the final 45-feet to the ground, you will be wondering why this short zip makes you most nervous. It is an awesome ending to a great day of zipping.

A short hike to the bus ends your incredible adventure of soaring through the trees. ACE's Zip Lines in West Virginia? An experience you will never forget.

  • Harness up and start climbing on ACE's land-based rock wall. Marked grips and footholds guide you to the top. A controlled belay gets you back to earth.
  • EuroBungy or trampoline on steriods. It's what you get when you combine a trampoline, bungee cord and harness. Gear up, hold on and take flight!
  • Snag a trophy bass at one of ACE's catch-and-release fishing holes - no fee or liscense required.
  • Head up to Mountain Top for a round of disc golf. Click here to find out more about our Disc Golf Course.

The paintball courses at ACE are works of art (not much of a stretch, since they're covered in paint). There are 2 speedball courses and a maze through the woods. Teambuilding

You've got a group that needs a challenge. We've got a whole lot of Teambuilding challenges that would love to have your group. Perfect fit. At ACE, we were doing teambuilding before anyone knew it was teambuilding, including us. But that just encouraged us to go bigger. We've organized several different teambuilding packages, including an Alpine Tower to host our high ropes course, adventure races and rafting, and a low ropes course. Turns out that most of the things we do here are a great way to build cohesion, enhance communication, and promote leadership.

It's fun. It's muddy. You will get dirty. The ACE Mud Obstacle Course was created to reach a whole new challenge in teambuilding. We're pretty sure we succeeded. Groups as small as 5 participants can go on the course, but if you want to race you'll need at least 10 participants. Teams race from incredibly muddy challenge to incredibly muddy challenge, with a little water thrown in here and there just so we can tell who's who. From classic Tug-O-War to a Tarzan Swing, with a whole lot in between, your group will be challenged right up until a winner emerges from the mud.
