Rafting the Best Whitewater Rapids of the Lower New River Twice in One Day
There are 24 rapids on the Lower New. Two come before lunch and no fewer than 22 come after lunch. On the Double Dare Lower New Trip, we put in at our normal lunch spot at Cunard and run 22 of the best whitewater rapids on the New River. We take out at Fayette Station and drive back to the put-in spot where we have our hot grilled lunch while the Guides get the boats ready for the second run. When lunch is over, we put the rafts back in the water and run the same 22 fabulous rapids again. What a day. This trip is best when river levels are high. Anytime in April, May or June will work in a normal year. We use our High Adventure 14-footers and, because of the higher water levels, we still spend about 5 to 6 hours on the water, even though we’re running over 40 whitewater rapids in 16 miles of whitewater! The only ride bigger than this on the Lower New River is ACE's Team Extreme Double Dare Trip.
You might be too tired after this trip to do anything but relax at ACE's Lake, but you might have time for an Evening on the Alpine Tower at ACE Adventure Resort.
Because you’re running over 40 rapids, you should be in decent physical shape to do this trip.
Two Runs on the Lower New in a Premier Raft
Designed to maximize the intensity of the New River, this trip takes on the toughest section - not once - but twice in the same day! On the 1st run we put it at Ace Beach and run to Fayette Station. We then hop on the bus and drive to Cunard to eat lunch. After lunch we hop back in the rafts and run Lower New River Gorge all over again. The lower section of the New River offers moderate to difficult rapids as a high volume of water constricts through the narrow gorge.
The first half of the trip offers easier class 2 & 3 rapids that allow rafters time to learn to follow guide commands and paddle as a group. Jump Rock allows everyone to get out of the raft alongside the river and jump off of an (approx) 15-20 ft rock into the pool below. After lunch the Lower New alternates from exciting Class 4-5 rapids to pools perfect for swimming. Upper and Lower Railroad, the Keeneys, Miller's Folly, and Double Z are among the many rapids that lie in wait on the second half of the trip. Experience the sense of a true outdoor adventure vacation as you encounter huge holes, roller coaster waves and house-size boulders plus some of the most stunning views in West Virginia.
This trip is appropriate for first time rafters, age fourteen and up, as well as experienced paddlers.
The Premier Double Dare Lower New is okay for first time rafters that are adventurous and in good physical shape.
The Season
Different seasons provide very diverse river experiences as the dynamics of the river and the rapids themselves are transformed. Spring rafting is a thrill ride with typically higher water levels, making the waves, holes and rapids even more powerful. March - May offers the biggest whitewater of the season, while summer months offer fun, excitement and warmer temperatures. Great whitewater remains a constant in September and October as fall is fabulous in the New River Gorge.
