Rafting The Best Whitewater Rapids of the Lower New Twice in One Day
There are 24 rapids on the Lower New River. Two come before lunch and no fewer than 22 come after lunch. On the Classic Double Header Lower New trip, we put in at our normal lunch spot at Cunard and run 22 of the best whitewater rapids on the river. We take out at Fayette Station and drive back to the put-in spot where we have our hot grilled lunch while the guides get the boats ready for the second run. When lunch is over, we put the rafts back in the water and run the same 22 fabulous whitewater rapids again. What a day. This trip is best when river levels are high. Anytime in April, May or June will work in a normal year. We use our stable classic 16-footers and, because of the higher water levels, we still spend about 5 to 6 hours on the water, even though we’re rafting over 40 rapids in 16 miles of whitewater on the Lower New!
The classic whitewater rafting trips are ideal for large groups that want to raft together, these trips work well for Corperate Groups, Boy Scout Groups, Girl Scout Groups, and Non-Profit Groups. Consider Scheduling your group a session at the Teambuilding Challenge Course in addition to your whitewater rafting trip.
Because you’re running over 40 rapids, you should be in decent physical shape to do this trip.
Two Runs on the Lower New in a Classic 16' Raft
The Classic Double Header Lower New trip offers two runs in one day on our most popular section of river. Both beginners and experts enjoy the magnificent scenery, encounters with wildlife, and glimpses of the many towns that once thrived along the river. After the first smaller rapid, which allows paddlers time to adjust and learn some commands from their guide, you will start off with big whitewater as you take on Upper and Lower Railroad, named for the railroad tressel that crosses the river here. This section of the New River offers moderate to difficult rapids as a high volume of water constricts through the narrow gorge. Later on, Jump Rock allows everyone to get out of the raft alongside the river and jump off of an (approx) 15-20 ft rock into the pool below. Take out is under the massive New River Gorge Bridge, the longest single span arch bridge in the northern hemisphere. Once you're finished you do it all over again. Lunch is provided at different spots on the river, depending on the water levels. Double the fun without doubling the cost!
Our Classic whitewater rafting trips use 16' rafts that accommodate larger group sizes (8+ guests plus the guide). The 16' boat is the most economical boat size. This trip is good for those who would prefer a more moderate stable ride.
The Season for Rafting the Lower New River
Different seasons provide very diverse river experiences as the dynamics of the river and the rapids themselves are transformed. Spring rafting is a thrill ride with typically higher water levels, making the waves, holes and rapids even more powerful. March - May offers the biggest whitewater of the season, while summer months offer fun, excitement and warmer temperatures. Great whitewater remains a constant in September and October as fall is fabulous in the New River Gorge.
