Whitewater rafting on the Gauley River is almost finished for this year. One more weekend, it looks like. If you’re one of the lucky ones heading down this weekend, congrats!
If not, remember, southern West Virginia is more than just the East Coast’s best adventures and exciting whitewater. There are plenty of things to see and do without getting wet and no paddles are required! And if there are repeats in here from yesterday’s post, well, that’s just because they bear repeating
The Arts—the local communities are full of traditional and heritage crafts celebrating life past and present in the Appalachian hills. Can’t miss:
· Tamarack, the state’s premiere artisan center is located less than 30 minutes from ACE Adventure Resort. Juried artisans from throughout the state retail items, gourmet food producers cook and sample their recipes, the Fine Arts Gallery features rotating multi-media, the in-house Theatre schedules concerts and theatric performances and the Greenbrier provides an easy on your budget menu (the fried green tomatoes and Greenbrier peaches are favorites).
Adventure—on the mild side.
· New River Jetboats in Ansted is the ticket for all ages. The boat will navigate you upstream for spectacular views and photo opportunities of the New River Gorge Bridge. On your way back to ACE, stop in at Blue Smoke Salsa where you may run into Farmer Jones delivering hot peppers and watch the Blue Smoke gang cook up a batch of their award-winning sauces.
History—celebrating the past. The New River Gorge region is rich in coal, timber and rural heritage. The migrant workforce of the past shines through in the traditions and culture of the area. Plan a visit now to
· The Whipple Company Store that is full of history from the region’s best known commodity-coal.
Fairs & Festivals—West Virginia communities love to celebrate their heritage and a variety of festivals and events mean that no matter when you visit ACE in the fall, you can take in an event. The state’s largest one-day festival,
· Bridge Day, is held annually on the third Saturday in October. Bring the family and while some of the members challenge the rapids and watch the BASE jumpers, you can browse the more than 150 vendors and watch from the bridge.
Right here at ACE, there’s all kinds of non-river adventures our miles of trails mean great hikes, mountain bike rides, ATV tours and horseback rides. Enjoy the changing colors in the New River Gorge right in your back yard.
No matter what “adventure”, you choose. Join us at ACE…. the fall season isn’t just for whitewater enthusiasts.
