Who are the best guest paddlers at ACE?
As a guide for more than two decades I have had some incredible crews. In fact, the strongest crew I ever had was an all-women crew on the Upper Gauley: They listened to commands and paddled like demons. The raft would surge forward when I called “all ahead.”Through the years, guides have always bragged about having the “best” crew ever! Well now it’s time to prove it — if you think you have a great crew, read on …
ACE is holding the first guest race – called the “Gauley Whitewater Rumble Race” — we are looking for the ultimate crew! We want to know who has what it takes to put together a team of friends and race for the top honors of being the best rafting crew of 2009
Besides bragging rights, you can win money!
We will put $100 per raft into a purse to be divided amongst the top three teams. The more teams, the more money!
And the best part: it is the deal of the century. The entry fee of only $600.00 ($100 per person on a six-man team) is 40% less than what a normal raft load would cost!
The race will be held on the Lower Gauley, from Wood’s Ferry to Sugar Creek, around 10 miles, using our 14-foot high-adventure rafts, guided only by our best guides. It will be 4 – 6 person teams (your decision – and we can even try to match you up with other paddlers if you don’t have enough people), in a sprint format, to see who can get down the river the fastest.
There are several factors to consider for success. Your guide will be key! We will schedule our very best guides – many of whom have racing experience. They know the fine lines that can cut minutes off your time.
But, be forewarned. You can request a specific guide, but it will be on a first-come, first-served basis and they won’t last long! So do your homework and pick your guide as soon as you can.
And stay tuned for my next post, when I’ll give you some tips on putting together the best team of paddlers!
