Gauley River Lunches: The Faces Behind The Sweet’s Falls Grill

Ever wonder how those delicious ACE lunches at Sweets’ Falls, culinary treats on a Gauley River overnight or sizzling mid-day meal on the Lower Gauley happen?

It all begins VERY early at the ACE lunch kitchen.

Located a few miles off property, the lunch kitchen provides all of the activity meals for our ACE guests. Manned by “Mom” (honest, in 18 years, I don’t know her “real” name), daughter Phyllis and the lunch team, this crew begins their workday at 5AM or earlier.

Armed with an upcoming trip list and desire to make each lunch an important part of your experience, the team goes to work cooking, slicing, mixing, and packing all of the items that make an ACE lunch a trip highlight. Homemade hummus and pita, fresh vegetables and dip, Mom’s famous salads (you’ll get at least two different ones in every meal) made from scratch, mouth-watering desserts, fruit and all of the fixings for the grilled lunch are carefully prepared under Phyllis’ watchful eye.

ACE lunches are exclusive by plan. The grilled burgers, chicken and tuna are the envy of the stream as they await the hungry rafter after navigating an Upper Gauley River gem, Sweet’s Falls.

On the Lower Gauley, the lunch stop is an energizing break midway through the pristine Gorge and rapids. Overnights are a multi-course smorgasbord with appetizers, main course and desserts easily found on your favorite buffet line (the folks in my office BEG for the chocolate mousse dessert every year.)

The Gauley lunches are similar to the New River with a little more flair…it’s “The Season” after all and rafting will work up your appetite! The gang at the ACE lunch kitchen invite you to sit back and enjoy their work.
