You might be wondering, “How can I, too, live, work, blog and play, all in the same place?”I’m not a native to West Virginia so it certainly took a series of events that landed me in this beautiful state. It started one sunny afternoon about 20 years ago. I was hanging out on my patch of grass in the quiet town of Virginia Beach, Virginia, attempting to get a tan. The shop I was working for was invited to go whitewater rafting for the weekend. A group of us had planned to ride up together – after all gas was topping the charts at 99 cents per gallon. We had to save somewhere.
The morning of our departure, all three of my travel mates canceled. I was on my own. Do I go? Do I stay home? What to do? In the end, I joined a group leaving from the chain store’s Williamsburg location. Little did I know at the time, this seemingly simple decision would be life-altering.
Yep, you guessed it. I met someone – a rafter and kayaker, at that. We did the long-distance thing for a while. Eventually we married and settled down in Charlottesville, Virginia, for a time. Of course, like so many, we traveled to West Virginia on the weekends to go kayaking, rock climbing, and guide a little.
We both have an insatiable appetite to be outside. “Any excuse is a good excuse” is my motto. So eventually, we figured out a way to move here permanently. Admittedly, it wasn’t easy, but when you follow your dreams (like a pit bull), it usually works out in the end.
I am now ACE’s Marketing Manager. I hope you’ve seen some of our work – catalogs, the website, emails and such. If not, it seems I have more to do. All-in-all it’s been an amazing time. It’s one of those rare job descriptions that includes taking a FunYak down the Upper Gauley and calling it research, or jumping on an ATV because we need more photos.
Just like I did, you need to come for a visit. I bet you’ll get hooked, too.
