Editor’s Note: This is a Great Gauley Blog-Off contest submission by Darylanne Pearson. Darylanne wrote a poem called “River Magic.” Terms and rules are listed at the end of this post and your essay and poem submissions are being accepted through Sept. 7, 2010.
At what point do you realize
there is no going back?
The Helmet, the Paddle, perhaps that
(Ride home in shame?)
If they’re giving you an out, maybe you really will die…
But on the water,
it all disappears …
There is nothing but the current, the raft,
the commands that you follow.
And then …
You are sitting at the top of a 13-foot drop,
waiting to fall into water …
The river takes you over the edge —
like a rollercoaster with no seatbelt!
And … you are addicted,
the River Magic holds your heart now —
see you next season!
