Gauley season is in full swing and it’s a good time to remind family and friends why I will be unable to attend all weekend events for the next few weeks.I’m usually the first in line for a wedding, football game (or tailgating at least), family picnic, or class reunion. But I’m confident in saying that NONE of these activities can compete with running the rapids on the Gauley River.
Please don’t be offended. I love you all and miss you terribly, but you simply don’t understand your competition. Why spend a sunny afternoon in high heels and a dress when I could put on a splash top, P.F.D., and helmet?
Why sit in a crowded stadium when I could be on a world-class river with nothing but mountains, trees, and water surrounding me?
Why re-live those embarrassing high school years when I could be meeting new folks from all over the world?
And most importantly, how could I sleep at night knowing that I had missed a chance to run rapids on one of the best rivers in the world?
So there is my R.S.V.P. to all of those fun events. I’m sorry, but the Gauley wins. Hands down.
Now I bet you want to ditch those weddings, reunions, and family trips and come down to West Virginia for some true weekend fun.
Go ahead and blame me whenever you break the news to friends and family. You’ll thank me a million times once you get to the river.
