As a sport that has gained great popularity at ACE Adventure Resort, disc golf also has a fun and rich history. In 1965, a California native named George Sappenfiled was a recreation counselor during summer break from college. He decided one day that golf would be a whole lot more fun if played with Frisbees, so acted on his idea one day and set up a course of targets for kids to play on. A year later, Sappenfield introduced the game to other Frisbee players, who then brought the game back to UC Berkeley. The game quickly became popular and the University installed a permanent course on campus in 1970.
Meanwhile, the East coast created standard targets and the game became more serious and competitive. Now disc golf courses can be found all around the United States, including ACE Adventure Resort, and it’s easy for anyone to get into the craze. If you care to look up a course near you, check out the PDGA.
So how exactly do you play disc golf?
Disc golf is played like traditional “ball” golf, but with flying discs instead of balls and clubs. One point (stroke) is counted each time the disc is thrown and when a penalty is incurred. The objective is to play each hole in the fewest strokes possible. The player with the lowest total strokes for the entire course wins. It’s important to always keep safety in mind and be aware of your surrounding when throwing the Frisbee. Learn more about the rules and regulations of disc golf here!
