Wet & Wild Summer Gauley Overnight Whitewater Rafting Trip
This is a true wilderness camping and whitewater rafting adventure. We choose the best sections of the Gauley…depending on current water conditions…and then custom build a self-contained overnight trip just for you. Once you launch on your first day’s adventure, your group will be alone in one of the East’s most beautiful and unspoiled canyons The Gauley River.
All your gear is carried in small rafts and ducks, so it’s a more “minimalist” camping experience than our other overnight trips. Meals are cooked on the campfire and individual 1 or 2-person tents are set up alongside the river. It’s calm and it’s quiet…a rare thing in this day and age. Sometimes, water levels and dam releases dictate that we change plans while we’re on the river. This adds even more to the sense of this being a real adventure in the outdoors. Your guides have emergency radio contact with ACE’s base camp in case river conditions force a change in the planned itinerary. In the East, there aren’t any commercial river overnights that compare. That’s because there are very few commercially run rivers as remote and unspoiled as the Gauley. If you’d like to soak in a unique outdoor experience, try a Summer Gauley Overnight trip.
Just like our Intermediate Summer Gauley and our Advanced Summer Gauley this is an ACE exclusive trip.
Trip Format
The Summer Gauley Trips are all about water flow. At 8 am we are informed of the water levels for the day and we begin to load boats and busses. A small release from the Summersville Dam will mean a ducky trip, the more water they release the larger the craft that can pass through the river. The Lower Gauley is influenced by the Meadow River, which adds to the c.f.s. (cubic feet per second) of water that the dam releases. ACE wants you to have the best trip possible and reserved the right to switch your section of river or craft size at any given time. Lost Paddle Canyon is a lush remote canyon which remains somewhat pristine. Enjoy camping riverside with a grilled dinner prepared by your guies. Enjoy a hike or sit around a campfire exchanging stories from the day. On day two, you will awaken to a hot breakfast, grilled to perfection, and a second day on the Gauley to enjoy with your newfound friends.
The Summer Gauley Whitewater Rafting Season
Different seasons provide very diverse river experiences as the dynamics of the river and the rapids themselves are transformed. Spring rafting is a thrill ride with typically higher water levels, making the waves, holes and rapids even more powerful. March - May offers the biggest whitewater of the season, while summer months offer fun, excitement and warmer temperatures. Great whitewater remains a constant in September and October as fall is fabulous in the Gauley. Lower water levels mean awesome ducky trips, guilding your craft through massive rocks with the help of your guides scouting the way.
