More Information on Trip #23: Traditional Double Lower

“The Best Rapids…Twice in One Day”
There are 24 rapids on the Lower New. Two come before lunch and no fewer than 22 come after lunch. On the Double Lower trip, we put in at our normal lunch spot at Cunard and run 22 of the best rapids on the river. We take out at Fayette Station and drive back to the put-in spot. There we have lunch while the Guides get the boats ready for the second run. When lunch is over, we put the rafts back in the water and run the same 22 fabulous rapids again. What a day!
This trip is best when river levels are high. Anytime in April, May or June will work in a normal year. Because of the higher water levels, we still spend about 5 to 6 hours on the water, even though we’re running over 40 rapids in 16 miles of whitewater! The Traditional format uses our large, roomy and stable 16-foot rafts. The Guides will take the most conservative lines through the rapids to minimize any chance of someone falling out and swimming.
Because you’re running over 40 rapids, you should be in decent physical shape to do this trip. Remember, for the wildest ride, choose the Premier Double-Dare with the 14-foot boats. For a more conservative ride and to save a little money, stick with the Traditional format. |
