World record for zip-lining set Sunday at ACE Adventure Resort
OAK HILL, W.Va. -- A new Guinness World Record (TM) has been set in West Virginia
According to W.Va. Secretary of State Natalie E. Tennant, 184 thrill-seekers who raced along a length of cable in an hour at ACE Adventure Resort beat the world record of 122 set in the Black Forest of Germany in 2010.
Guinness World Records (TM) has officially approved the result, Tennant said that in her capacity as an official counter, the necessary number of participants had apparently been met and exceeded shortly after 1 p.m.
Tennant said the event was incredibly exciting -- more exciting than she expected it might be.
"As Secretary of State, I've officially started elections before, and I'm not sure if I was ever this nervous," she said.
Earlier this month, officials at the resort had been surprised by an onrush of participation in the challenge, which was part of a celebration of the expansion of its zip-line course, according to Beth Gill, marketing director for the resort.
More than 180 signed up for the event, and based on that enthusiasm, Gill said she expected the outcome would be exceptional.
"Given the response from zip-liners, I expected that we'd beat the record, but we actually crushed it," Gill said.
The resort expanded the zip-line course along the rim of New River Gorge in 2011, extending its full length to a mile and incorporating a 250-foot sky bridge, a 55-foot viewing tower, and more than 800 feet of zip-line.
The only zip-line course located within the New River Gorge and the first located in West Virginia, the facility has become one of the chief attractions at the 1,500-acre vacation park.
Established in 1980 as American-Canadian Expeditions, the resort is among the leading outfitters of whitewater rafting trips on the New and Gauley rivers and offers more than a dozen other outdoor-adventure activities, including hiking, biking, fishing, kayaking, and ATV touring.
As a result of its size, number of annual guests, and the number of recreational venues it offers, the resort was designated as the largest adventure resort in North America by The Travel Channel in 2010.
