Howboutchee! My name is Tug. Many of ya’ll know me as the Tall Ugly Guy sitting in the back of your raft yelling commands at you. Well that is true, it is my true passion and what brought me to this Shangri-la of outdoor living known as Fayetteville, WV. I was in college at Liberty in Virginia, and I walked past the summer job bulletin board and saw the ad for a whitewater raft guide. I thought, “what a cool way to spend the summer”. I had never rafted before, so my first trip was a training run and, well, I fell in love with this place and have never really looked back.
That was in 1990. Since then I have done thousands of river trips. My favorite, of course, is the Upper Gauley. I’ve met hundreds of great people, many of whom I keep in touch with throughout the year, and at the top of the list is meeting my wife Cindy. She was a guest on a trip; but that’s a story for another day! Digressing, I did complete a BA degree at Davis & Elkins College and a Masters program at the University of Utah.
Next month, I begin my 20th year of working for ACE Adventure Resort. And, as the good ol’ Grateful Dead once sang, “What a long strange trip it has been!” In my years here I have done many things and held many positions. I have been in charge of training raft guides, program director, grass-cutter, among others, and now I am currently managing ACE Adventure Gear Shoppe (AAG).
Running the off-campus retail operation is something I wasn’t sure about, but I have found that I really enjoy it and I go boatin’ every Wednesday night for work! That’s right! AAG runs a free shuttle on Wednesday nights for boaters. You can call me at 888.SURF.WVA for details. AAG is located on Fayette Station Rd. just up the hill from the take out on the New River. Stop by for a visit!
